Career Day at Mountain Empire High School

On March 11, 2016, the Alpine Mountain Empire Chamber of Commerce hosted Career Day at Mountain Empire High School in Pine Valley, CA.  Along with the high school students, sixth, seventh, and eight grade students from Campo, Descanso, Jacumba, Pine Valley and Potrero also attended the event.

After an inspirational speech from former National Football League middle linebacker Chris Washington, students visited booths presented by 22 companies in a wide-range of industries.  Students were encouraged to ask questions about the industries and possible careers options.

Visitors to the Project Cornerstone booth learned about the local construction aggregates industry, various careers, education and training requirements, and the science behind concrete.  Plus, students made their own concrete stars to take home.  Project Cornerstone's Alyssa Burley and Jamie Metivier were there to answer questions and lead the students through the concrete activity.

Project Cornerstone Celebrates Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Month!

March is STEM month!  STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.  STEM programs are popping up all over the country to inspire students to go into STEM careers.  Project Cornerstone's programs fit perfectly into STEM-focused education.  Students learn the science behind concrete, technologies used in mining construction aggregates, engineering and mathematics that are used in the industry.

To celebrate STEM month, Project Cornerstone increased its educational efforts throughout San Diego County.

Throughout the month, Project Cornerstone estimates it reached over 2,200 students and parents with positive messages about construction aggregates and the importance of having local aggregate supplies.

Activities and events included in-class programs with 210 sixth-grade students from Greenfield Middle School and 36 advanced eight-grade students from Jean Farb Middle School; 600 middle and high school students at Career Day from Campo Middle School, Pine Valley Middle School, Portrero Elementary and Mountain Empire High School; field trips with 180 sixth-grade students from Cajon Valley Middle School; and over 1200 students and parents who participated in our booth at the San Diego Festival of Science and Engineering EXPO Day at PETCO Park.

Call for Volunteers: Career Day at Mountain Empire High School

Project Cornerstone is looking for volunteers from the construction aggregates (and related) industries to participate in Career Day at Mountain Empire High School.

The Alpine Mountain Empire Chamber of Commerce has requested that Project Cornerstone provide information about the construction aggregates industry at its Career Day on Wednesday, March 18, 2015.  It will be an all day event; the exact times have not yet been released.

The Career Day will introduce 200 middle school students from Pine Valley Middle School and 400 high school students from Mountain Empire High School to various career paths and industries.  Ed Hidalgo, the Senior Director of Staffing at Qualcomm, has just agreed to be the event’s motivational speaker.

Project Cornerstone will have a booth with information about the construction aggregates industry and career options.  Students will filter through the booths and ask questions about the industries.  It will have a greater impact on the students if we have volunteers from the local industry (e.g., quarry operators, aggregate drivers and heavy equipment operators) be there to answer specific questions about what it’s like to work in the industry.

If you are interested in participating in the event, please contact Alyssa Burley at (619) 284-8515 or .
