Annual Community Events

Project Cornerstone participates in multiple annual community events throughout San Diego County.  Participation in these events allows Project Cornerstone to reach children and adults who would otherwise not be reached through an in-class activity, field trip, or informational presentation.   It is important for Project Cornerstone to participate in these events because they provide a venue to:

1

Meet community members face-to-face to answer basic industry questions like 'why is there a quarry in my community' and 'what is in all those trucks?'

2

Provide a friendly face for the industry and interesting facts to help community members make an informed opinion about the local quarries.

3

Educate the public that using locally sourced aggregates have environmental and economic benefits like lower greenhouse gases and keeping well-paying jobs in the community.

San Diego Festival of Science & Engineering

EXPO DAY is the Festival’s signature event, with more than 130 local businesses, corporations, and organizations providing interactive, hands-on science, technology, engineering and math exhibits and activities to budding K-12 science lovers.

Why does Project Cornerstone participate in this event?
The San Diego Festival of Science & Engineering is Project Cornerstone's largest event, reaching 1,200 children and adults in one day!  It's a highly effective way to get the word out about the importance of the local construction aggregates industry and provide the public with a keepsake to take home - a hand-made concrete star.

Escondido Tots 'N Trucks

"Tots 'n Trucks" is an educational and social event for young children and families living in the community, where funds raised through this event support the mission of Escondido Community Child Development Center (ECCDC) "Investing in Our Community….One Family at a Time".  At the event, children have the opportunity to climb, explore, and experience all kinds of trucks and vehicles, and also learn about what they do and meet the people who operate them.

Why does Project Cornerstone participate in this event?
Escondido has an active construction aggregates industry.  This event allows the community to learn about the important role construction aggregates play in their every day lives by building their homes, schools, hospitals and infrastructure within their community.

Lakeside Touch A Truck

Touch-A-Truck is a family friendly event where everyone that attends gets to experience what it is like to sit in the driver’s seat of some of San Diego’s largest vehicles.  The event is set up like a carnival with games, food trucks, and over 40 vehicles to enjoy.  Proceeds will fund educational programs geared toward the trucking, construction & industrial career paths for our youth.

Why does Project Cornerstone participate in this event?
Lakeside is home to a vital local construction aggregates industry.  This event allows the community to mingle with the operators, learn some science, and leave with a better understanding of the necessary role the industry plays in their community.

Ruben H. Fleet Science Center Construction Crew Summer Camp

The Construction Crew is a week-long summer camp devoted to the science of construction.  Project Cornerstone offers campers a lesson in construction aggregates (i.e., sand, gravel and crushed stone) used in building materials like asphalt and concrete and campers learn the science of making concrete. Additional construction-related activities are offered by the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center staff.

Why does Project Cornerstone participate in this event?
Children come to the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center Summer camps from all over the greater San Diego area.  These students are inquisitive and eager to learn.  Participating in this event allows Project Cornerstone to reach young children whose parents are encouraging them to be scientists and learn about the world around them, including the value of the local construction aggregates industry.

California STEM Symposium

The California STEM Symposium is a three-day event full of inspirational speeches, opportunities to collaborate with thousands of teachers and administrators, and resources you can take back to your classroom, all focused around science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

Why does Project Cornerstone participate in this event?
Project Cornerstone's booth and breakout session at the symposium allows us to make contact with teachers and administrators who will participate in our workshops and professional development events.  Teaching teachers to bring our programs into their classrooms exponentially increases our reach year-over-year, with limited funding.
